Pratima Devi, the mother of Bhojpuri superstar Pawan Singh, withdrew her candidature from the Karakat Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. Her sons are still in the field as candidates. Upendra Kushwaha, the chief of Rashtriya Lok Morcha and former Union Minister, is contesting as an NDA candidate from this seat in South Bihar. Pawan Singh had initially decided to contest elections from Karakat after rejecting the BJP ticket from Asansol in West Bengal.
The Election Commission has confirmed the withdrawal of Pratima Devi’s name, who had filed her nomination as an independent candidate on May 14. It is believed that she had filed her nomination as an alternative candidate to Pawan Singh, who was concerned about his nomination being rejected. The last day for withdrawal of nominations for the Karakat seat was Friday, where voting is scheduled for June 1. Pawan Singh’s decision to contest against the NDA candidate was met with criticism from some BJP leaders, including Union Minister RK Singh, who is contesting from the neighboring Ara Lok Sabha seat.
Pawan Singh is still a member of BJP, and there were reports that he had sought a ticket from RJD before deciding to contest as an independent candidate. In a social media post, Pawan Singh emphasized a focus on development and promised a new beginning for Karakat. He had previously been named as the BJP candidate from the Asansol seat in West Bengal but declined to contest, leading the party to field SS Ahluwalia instead. In Asansol, he is up against TMC candidate Shatrughan Sinha.
Despite Pratima Devi’s withdrawal from the race, Pawan Singh’s candidacy in the Karakat Lok Sabha seat remains in place. Upendra Kushwaha, as an NDA candidate, poses a challenge to Singh in this constituency.
