Modi and allies to meet post-election.

Indian Prime Minister Modi Seeks Support to Form Government

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet with his allies to discuss the formation of a new government after his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), fell short of an absolute majority in parliament in a surprising election outcome. The BJP won 240 seats on its own, 32 seats shy of the majority needed in the 543-member lower house. This result has caused concerns among investors and led to a sharp decline in the stock market.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats, 20 more than required to form a government. On the other hand, the opposition alliance led by Rahul Gandhi’s Congress party won 230 seats, surpassing initial predictions. The unexpected surge in seats won by the Congress party is expected to strengthen Gandhi’s position within the party.

Despite the setback faced by Modi’s party, efforts to form a government by the opposition may be hindered by key allies of the BJP who have expressed continued support for Modi. A meeting of the India Alliance is scheduled in New Delhi to discuss the way forward in light of the election results.

In a gathering at the party headquarters following the election results, Modi expressed gratitude for the people’s support, pledging to work even harder in his third term. He acknowledged the significance of the people’s blessings for the third consecutive time, stating that it boosts morale and provides renewed determination for his government’s future endeavors.
