The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings about Cyclone Remal hitting the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh shortly. As a precursor to the cyclone’s arrival, rain has already started in some parts of Kolkata. The Governor of Bengal, Dr. CV Anand Bose, has instructed citizens to be vigilant and follow the necessary Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to stay safe during the cyclone. With 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams deployed in the region, preparations are being made to mitigate the impact of the cyclone.

Increasing Wind Speed and Impact of Cyclone Remal

As Cyclone Remal approaches, the wind speed is expected to increase from 110-120 kmph to 135 kmph. The cyclone’s effects are predicted to persist for the next 6 hours before weakening. The heavy rainfall accompanying the cyclone has led to emergency measures being taken by authorities in Kolkata, with the issuance of helpline numbers by the Kolkata Police to assist those in need. Instances of damage, such as fallen trees, are being promptly addressed by NDRF teams, ensuring that roads are clear and safe for Travel as the cyclone progresses.

Landfall of Cyclone Remal and Emergency Response Efforts

Somnath Dutt, IMD Kolkata’s eastern region head, has confirmed that the landfall of Cyclone Remal on the coast of Bangladesh and West Bengal began around 8:30 pm. As of 10:30 pm, the landfall process is ongoing, with expectations that it will be completed by 12:30 pm. NDRF Eastern Region Commander Gurminder Singh has indicated that 14 NDRF teams are on the ground, prepared to respond to the cyclone’s impact. While the wind speed during landfall is anticipated to be between 120-130 kmph, authorities are optimistic that the cyclonic storm will not be as severe as previous events like Super Cyclone Amphan.
