Hamas chief says Israeli amendments to ceasefire proposal led to deadlock

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh blamed Israel for the impasse in Gaza ceasefire talks and reiterated key demands for a permanent end to Israel’s offensive. Earlier this month, Hamas agreed to a ceasefire proposal from mediators, but Israel disputed this and called it a three-phase proposal, leading to a breakdown in talks.

Haniyeh stated that Hamas is committed to pursuing all means to end the war in Gaza and emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal from Gaza, a prisoner exchange, and lifting the blockade. Israel insists on a hostage-exchange deal and aims to eliminate Hamas, while the United States supports the Palestinian Authority ruling Gaza after the war. Health officials report thousands of deaths in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
